Aeschylus' Semele is a play that exists in theory and in fragments; we know the plot structure, we know the likely characters, we have a few lines from the Chorus and some shreds of a speech by Hera (in her only extant onstage appearance in the tragic canon). We have very little else. My work on Semele is an act of creative reconstruction, an educated guess at what-might-have-been, obedient to the structure and conventions of the time (or as best as one can be with two and a half millennia between us).
